Spiders

General Facts

  • All Spiders are Carnivorous (do not eat vegetative matter)
  • No spiders (or arachnids) have antennae or wings.
  • Spiders have 8 eyes and 8 legs (different to insects which have 6 legs!)
  • Spiders have fangs which they use to inject venom; this is used to paralyze and kill prey or to defend themselves against predators.
  • Spiders do not chew their prey; they suck the fluid out of them.
  • All spiders can produce silk which is used for many purposes including:
    - Catching prey
    - Creating egg sacs
    - Reproducing
    - Making tunnels smooth
    - Wrapping prey

Spiders are capable of consuming and digesting their own silk in order to regain the source of protein for re-use.

Life Cycle
The mature female creates an egg sac from webbing

  • Each sac may contain up to 300 eggs
  • Females are capable of producing 2 – 3 egg sacs once maturity is reached, depending on the specie of spider.
  • The female will protect and nurture the egg sac until the eggs have hatched.
  • Once eggs have hatched, the spider larvae will shed its exterior cuticle (skin) at least once before emerging from the egg sac as spiderlings.
  • Once hatched the mother spider will protect the spiderlings until they are ready to find their own habitat.
  • Web weaving spiderlings find their own habitat by producing a thread of silk which they use to balloon or parachute them in the wind, away from their original nest.
  • Some mother spiders will carry their young on their backs. (usually ground dwelling species)
  • Immature spiders will shed their outer cuticle approximately 5 times before they reach maturity. They must do this in order to grow.
  • The immatures look very similar to the mature species
  • Some immature spiders may have slightly different markings to those of the adult.
  • When the spider has reached maturity, they are ready to mate and continue the reproduction cycle.
  • Some males are killed during or shortly after the sexual encounter.
  • The female spider in most species are larger and have brighter colours than the male.

Control of Spiders Using BIFLEX®

  • Biflex® is the known as the best in spider management.
